Watch: Steve Smith, Starc pick Yashasvi Jaiswal as India’s next ‘superstar’

Star Australian cricketers Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood have tipped India’s rising star, Yashasvi Jaiswal, as the next big name to dominate world cricket. The 22-year-old left-handed batter has rapidly ascended the ranks since making his international debut, with his standout performances marking him as a future superstar.
Jaiswal made a sensational entry into Test cricket in July 2023, scoring 171 runs on debut against the West Indies. He followed this up with a record-breaking series against England, amassing 712 runs across five matches earlier this year, becoming only the second Indian cricketer to score more than 700 runs in a Test series, placing him in elite company.
The talented Mumbai-based cricketer is also making waves in the shortest format of the game. In just 23 T20I matches, Jaiswal has accumulated an impressive 723 runs, further establishing himself as a player for all formats.
In a video posted by Star Sports Tamil on X (formerly Twitter), several top Australian players were asked to name the Indian cricketer they believed would become the next-generation superstar. Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, and Alex Carey all named Jaiswal as their pick.
“Jaiswal could be a generational superstar,” Smith confidently stated, while Starc echoed the sentiment, adding, “Jaiswal’s probably the next big superstar, I think.”
Carey, Hazlewood, and Lyon also expressed similar views, each backing Jaiswal as India’s next cricketing sensation. “Jaiswal looks like a proper cricketer for all formats,” said Hazlewood, emphasizing Jaiswal’s adaptability across different formats.
Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and batter Travis Head also weighed in, but their pick for India’s future superstar was Shubman Gill. Green praised Gill’s technique and potential, while Head lauded his ability to make “bowling look slow” and dominate pace and spin.
While Jaiswal is yet to face Australia in Tests or ODIs, Shubman Gill has already played significant innings against the Aussies. Gill made his Test debut during the iconic Boxing Day Test in 2020 in Melbourne and has tallied 272 runs across seven ODIs against Australia.
India’s cricket calendar is packed with important fixtures, including a two-match Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand starting in September. However, all eyes are already on the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scheduled to kick off on November 22 in Perth. The five-match Test series between India and Australia is expected to reignite one of cricket’s most intense rivalries. For India, this series offers an opportunity to further cement their dominance in Australia, with a chance to win their third consecutive Test series Down Under.
